Write About What Interests You

A Web Copywriting Tip by Nick Usborne

Everyone who writes for a living likes to think they are professional enough to do their best work on just about any subject, so long as the briefing is comprehensive enough.

Is that really true? I'm not sure. I think we do our best work when writing about subjects that interest us on a personal level.

I have written copy for all kinds of products and services in all manner of industries, and I think I do a pretty good job most of the time. But if I'm completely honest with myself, I would have to say that my best copy is written when I truly believe in the product or service, and actually have an interest in it.

But let's take a step beyond that. When we recognize that writing for a particular client, product or service is touching us on a personal level, and increasing the pleasure we take from our work, it's time to think about what clients to go for next. Or, indeed, what job to apply for.

Because even if you do write as well for a product that doesn't interest you at all, I think most of us would agree that copywriting is more fun when you have a personal interest in the subject.

So why not plan you future work around what interests you most? I think you'll become a better writer as a result, and you'll almost certainly enjoy your work more.
