A Web Copywriting Tip by Nick Usborne
Writing for the web, emails and newsletters has something in common with direct marketing: If you don't catch people's attention and hold their interest within the first few seconds, they'll stop reading.
That means putting your best foot forward and pulling people into the text quickly and firmly.
There are two elements at play here. First, if you have something dramatic, unique and important to say or promise, get that promise into the first heading and first paragraph.
Now you have their attention.
How do you hold their interest? You write fast-paced copy. No general introductory paragraph. Get straight to the meat of the promise. No long sentences. No long words. You just jump in fast and simple. Short words.
Short sentences. Short paragraphs. Create a fast pace in the opening of the text and you'll pull your readers in.
If what you are saying interests them, this is your best way of getting people involved with the page, and reading through to the end.
