Keep Your Voice Personal Across All Media

A Web Copywriting Tip by Nick Usborne

 

Voice is a delicate issue when we talk about the online environment. When I talk about writing in your natural voice, people sometimes think I mean they should write in a way that is all chummy...like you're talking to your closest buddies.

 

That's not what I mean at all. It makes no sense to write that way to an audience of people you can't see and don't know.

 

But you can still write in a personal way. I'm writing to you right now. I don't know who you are...but I can still write to you in an informal way which is very close in tone to how I would talk to you over a coffee or two.

 

So...how should this natural voice find expression on your web site, in your emails, in your newsletter and your web log?

 

The voice should remain 'yours'...but the tone and approach will likely differ a little.

 

Look at it this way...the way that I talk to a bank manager, a client, a five year old child, my partner...I talk to them all in different ways. But the voice is still mine, still recognizable ME.

 

The same should be true across your web media. The way that you talk on your site may be different from how you write your web log or an announcement email. But they should all sound like YOU.

 

And that sound should ring true, be natural.
