Are you limiting the success of your own Site Build It web site?

 

The mind is a curious thing. It's our greatest gift and asset...but also plays some tricks on us. Or perhaps we simply don't use it terribly well.

 

One of the things our minds can do very effectively is limit the scope of our own success.

 

I'm going to take my own Site Build It site, CoffeeDetcetive.com as an example.

 

When I first started building it I really had no idea how successful it might be, or not. I didn't want to build any false expectations.

 

As a result, I put in enough time to get it going, but no more than that. In real life, I had to invest most of my time in doing work that I knew would pay the bills. So Coffee Detective was no more than a hobby. A curiosity.

 

After nine months or so I was quite pleased. The site was generating enough income to pay a few bills each month.

 

And that is pretty much where I set my expectations for the site. In my mind I said something like, "Hey, if this site can bring me $1,000 a month in extra cash, that's great."

 

At this point, a funny thing happened, without me really being aware of it. My expectation became a self-fulfilling prophesy. I was content with a "hobby" site that generated $1,000 in revenues each month. And that's exactly what I got.

 

I really did get what I asked for. For the next year the site continued to generate almost exactly what I expected from it, month after month.

 

And I would probably not have thought much more about it if SiteSell hadn't come up with their new Content 2.0 feature for SBI owners.

 

I loved the idea of my visitors being able to interact more with my site and with me. So I implemented Content 2.0 in a variety of areas.

 

A few things happened.

 

First, my visitors started to interact with me. Which I found to be fun and refreshing.

 

Next, all those extra content pages being created by my visitors were found by Google and the other search engines. So my traffic started growing a little faster.

 

Finally, the expectations I had set for my site a year ago began to shake, and then crumble.

 

"Hang on," I thought. "What's with this $1,000 a month expectation? Why not $5,000 a month? Or $10,000 a month?"

 

It's still a hobby. I still have to work full time at my job to make a living. And I still can't devote a huge amount of time to Coffee Detective.

 

But I can and have removed my limiting expectations for the site.

 

I think it can be a lot bigger than it is now in terms of content, reach and audience.

 

And I think it will be.
