A self-paced copywriting course by Marcia Yudkin.
This home-study course is intended for copywriters at all stages in their careers.
If you’re just starting out, this course will give you the knowledge and skills you need to start writing professional and persuasive copy for your first clients.
If you already have some experience, I think you’ll find this a great way to hone your skills, learn new strategies, clean up a few sloppy habits and discover new ways to make your copy sharper and more effective.
And it’s not just about hard selling copy...
There are numerous copywriting courses and guides that teach you the craft of direct selling. That is to say, you’ll learn direct response copywriting and will become skilled in writing direct mail letters and online sales pages.
But the world of opportunity for copywriters is much broader than “direct selling” alone.
There are hundreds of thousands of companies out there who need print materials and web pages that communicate clearly and persuasively...but are not intended to make an immediate sale.
This huge area of copywriting is ignored in most courses.
In this course you’ll learn both approaches – how to write copy that drive an immediate sale AND how to write clear, persuasive material that is designed to inform and educate.
Before I talk about the course itself...
The reason I asked to review this course is that I have known its author and creator, Marcia Yudkin, for many years now.
She is one of the few copywriters, authors and instructors with whom I feel completely comfortable.
Why? Because she is an ethical copywriter. That is to say, she won’t take on clients who ask her to deceive, over-promise or misinform their customers and prospects.
Unfortunately, that is a rare quality these days.
Too many copywriters will use their skills to persuade people to buy products and services through less than honest means.
But for you, this is good news. It means that when you take this course, you’ll be learning proven skills and powerful ways to write and persuade...but you won’t be taught how to pack your copy with hype.
How the course works...
There are six separate lessons in this course, each of them covering an essential aspect of copywriting.
Lesson 1 – Articulate the what and the “so what”
Lesson 2 – Differentiate and dramatize
Lesson 3 – Devise strong, clear offers
Lesson 4 – Captivate and tantalize
Lesson 5 – Bolster credibility
Lesson 6 – Tweak the tone, smooth the flow
These lessons cover all the basic areas you need to understand in order to learn and polish your craft.
Here’s what you get in the package
Don’t expect the usual glossy binder and set of CDs. Marcia has done things a little differently.
You get a copy of her book, Persuading on Paper
You get a course manual, Secrets of Mouthwatering Copy
You get a report, Shorter: Say it in Fewer Words
And you get 8 hours of audio on 6 CDs.
When I first started going through the package, I must admit to a few minutes’ confusion. I wasn’t quite sure where to start.
So I spread everything out on a table, read the introductory letter and figured out what to do.
And I like it. I like how the course is structured.
With each lesson you have reading to do. And you have homework assignments. There are even sealed envelopes for you to open only after your assignment is completed.
And the CDs are excellent. Each is a recording of a live webinar. So you not only get the recording of Marcia’s presentation, but also get to listen in to questions and comments from the attendees.
Practical help with plenty of examples
Finally, and this is an aspect of Marcia’s teaching style I have always admired, the course is jam packed with examples.
So you are not just working on theories and best practices, you are also applying your skills to real-life sales situations...analyzing what others have written and then finding ways to make improvements.
In conclusion...
This is a very practical, hands-on course. It’s self-paced, so you can do it in six weeks or six months, according to the time you have available.
Best of all, in my view, you learn a broad range of copywriting skills...from writing a hard-hitting sales letter to crafting an informative company brochure.
This breadth of copywriting skill will serve you well when it comes to finding work and building your portfolio.
Highly recommended.
